Homework Update and Link to Rubric

Hi all,

For Friday, please be sure to finish your drafts of Paper 1 and read pages 226-230 in the Handbook. Below is a link to the rubric that will be used to evaluate your papers.

Rubric Drafting

Hi all,

In order for us to determine how Paper 1 will be evaluated, we'll be working on drafting a rubric today.

To begin, please review the assignment sheet.

Then on a piece of paper, write down five things you think drafts must do in order to successfully respond to the assignment prompt. After you've written down five things, rank them by order of importance (1 is the most important, 5 is the least important). You'll have about 10 minutes to review the assignment sheet and make your list.

Next, you will be put into groups. Share and compare lists with your group mates. Elect a scribe and make a new list of the five most important things you all agree on. Rank this list by order of importance as well. When you've finished, add your list to your group's section of the table in this document. You'll have about 10 minutes to do this as well.

When you've finished, we'll look at all the responses together and argue for and against criteria we like, don't like, or need more information on. I'll take the notes and compile them into a rubric that will be posted to the blog later today.

Grammar & Punctuation Worksheet

Use your McGraw-Hill Handbook to correct the following sentences. Assume that the logic and argument presented in each is sound and accurate. Rather than critiquing the argument, evaluate the sentence structure, grammatical usage, and word choice. Indicate the correct page number in your answer.

Commas

My favorite TV show is Firefly which is basically the best TV show of all time.

If ever there was a TV show better than Firefly I have never seen it.

Comma Splices, Run-on Sentences and Fragments

In my favorite episode of Firefly, River tears the pages out of  Shepherd’s bible because she does not understand what it is, later she puts the pages back in and apologizes.

Glee details the lives of several high school students who are members of the school’s show choir they are in competition with some of the best show choirs in the nation currently Sue Sylvester is trying to sabotage the team.

Although many of the characters on Glee are awesome, Puck is by far the best character. Because he has a really cool haircut.

Voice

The most influential TV show of our generation will be The Office.

Many managerial styles were based on Michael Scott’s tactics at Dunder-Mifflin.

Pam and Jim’s wedding was so beautiful!

Wordiness

Because of the fact that South Park is so disrespectful to a lot of people it should be taken off the air until such time as the show’s writers decide to stop being such jerks.

In this day and age shows like South Park have the capacity to confuse young children about the nature of reality despite of the fact that they portray a fictional community.

The fact is, South Park creators have begun the process of indoctrinating young people into thinking a liberal manner.

Grammar Basics

Lately, i have been watching star trek: the next generation.

Commander Datas sense of humor, even though he is an android, is remarkable.
